On June 17, 2025, a joint operation led by the Kandi Police Station, in collaboration with the Child Development Project Officer Shri Debasish Das, resulted in the successful prevention of a child marriage in Kalyanpur. Acting on a tip-off, officers arrived at the scene to discover a clandestine marriage ceremony where the bride was a mere 15 years old. As law enforcement arrived, several attendees attempted to escape, but the police were able to apprehend the groom, Lal Ghosh (27), and three accomplices, ensuring the safety of the minor.Following this incident, on June 18, 2025, Beldanga Police Station also acted swiftly to thwart another child marriage in Harek Nagar village. Despite facing opposition from the families involved and local community members, police efforts led to the rescue of the underage girl. She has since been placed under the protective care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The groom and a local facilitator of the marriage were detained, with legal action initiated under Case No. 404/25.These recent interventions reflect a growing resolve among law enforcement agencies to combat child marriage, a practice that not only violates children’s rights but also poses significant threats to their health and future opportunities. Local authorities are now calling on community support to continue dismantling such harmful traditions and ensuring the protection of minors.As these cases highlight, the fight against child marriage is far from over in many regions. Continuous education and community engagement are essential in changing perceptions and promoting children’s rights. The successful interventions by police in Kandi and Beldanga serve as a crucial reminder of the power of collaboration between law enforcement and community stakeholders in safeguarding the future of children.
